Brochures can be designed in two main styles:
1. DL – Tri Fold : DL is A4 folded into 3, so that each page then becomes 210X99mm
2. A5 Bi-Fold : This style is the same as taking an A4 page and folding it in half to form a booklet.

Various types of Stationery have been grouped together under the ‘Stationery Section’ of this site….but what are all these items?
Letterhead : Letterhead refers to paper printed with your log and contact details, that you can then use to print correspondance and other documents on.
With Complement Slips : With Complement slips are notes that usually include your logo and contact details plus provide space for hand written messages. These are usually printed in DL size – 99mm X 210mm (A4 folded in 3). We can print them in other sizes if you like.
Envelopes : Are printed with your logo and address details in 1 or 2 colour designs (full colour is also available). Most common requests are for DL Envelopes, however other sizes are available.
Pads : These notepads are printed with your logo/design on each page. Notepads are glued at the top, for easy peal and use. Notepad comes cardboard backed, to make them sturdy and travel friendly.
Invoice Books : Our invoice books are available in Duplicate or Triplicate forms in Black & White or Colour. They are sturdy and include auto numbering from what ever starting point you need.
Letterhead, With Complement Slips and Notepads are usually printed on 100gsm paper (more about paper weights below). Invoice books are printed on 90gsm. Other weights are available upon request.

Colour is generally more expensive than black and white, though in some cases the price can be the same.
They are denoted throughout this site as:
Colour - Col or CMYK (which is the printing process used to produce full colour prints)
Black and White – B&W or B+W

gsm – Grams per Square Meter
This denotes the weight of the paper. As a comparison:
80 gsm : the weight of your standard copier/printer paper.
80-130 gsm : are thin paper, typically used for letterbox distribution and high turnover promotional material, like flyers. Note that any paper less than 140 gsm will show through printing on the other side.
130-150 gsm : are ideal for flyers and brochures, especialy folder items and items were “show through” is not desirable.
200+ gsm : is reasonably thick, high quality paper, that is not recommended for folding items.
300-350 gsm : is a thick card stock used for business cards

A6 is 105mm X 148mm (A5 folded in half)
A5 is 210mm X 148mm (A4 folded in half)
A4 is 297mm X 210mm (A4 is the standard letter paper size.)
A3 is 297mm X 420mm (2 times A4)
A2 is 420mm X 594mm (2 times A3)
A1 is 594mm X 841mm (2 times A2)
A0 is 841mm X 1189mm (2 times A1)
DL is 99mm X 210mm (A4 folded in 3)

Bond is a flat surface but Matt (non-reflective) surface
Silk has a very smooth and slightly reflective surface
Gloss is a completely smooth surface with a shiny surface

Saddle Stitched : is where two or more sheets of paper are bound together in the spine with two staples, folded in half. This method of binding is not viable for over 60 page booklets as they are too thick to satisfactorily saddle stitch, often bulging at the spine.
Wire Binding : Also known as “Wiro Binding” this is where the spine of your booklet is hole punched and then has wire threaded through the holes to bind it, forming a coil at the spine. This is great for large documents.
Perfect Binding : With this binding merthod the spine is glued and ends with a flat edge. Most large comercial books are perfect bound.
Stapled : Some people require custom staple positioning (such as at the top, rather than side. We can cater to all your needs.

Quick Facts about Bitmap Images
- Bitmap images are made up of colored dots (pixels) in a grid
- Also known as raster images
- Resolution dependent – resizing affects image quality
- Scanned images and digital photos are bitmaps
Quick Facts about Vector Images
- Vector Images are made up of individual objects composed of lines and shapes with different attributes such as color.
- Resolution Independent – scaling images does not affect quality
- Smaller file size
- Not suitable for photo-realistic reproduction
- Fonts are vector objects

Resolution refers to the number of colored dots or pixels that make up an image.
It is commonly expressed in dpi or dots per inch.
Resolution Rules-of-thumb:
- The higher the dpi, the greater the resolution, the better the image quality. But don’t go overboard. Higher resolution images create larger file size.
- Image resolution is directly and inversely proportional to an image’s physical size. When you increase the resolution of an image, reduce its size. When you enlarge an image, lower the resolution. Otherwise, the image will print poorly.
- For printed images, the ideal resolution is 300 dpi for images and 400 dpi for text at the final printed size.
Here is a chart to help you determine the proper dimensions of your image at your desired print size and in the recommended resolution of 300 dpi.
| PRINTED SIZE | MIN. IMAGE DIMENSIONS | IMAGE RESOLUTION |
2” x 1.60” | 640 x 480 pixels | 300 dpi |
| 2″ x 2″ | 600 x 600 pixels | 300 dpi |
| 2.67” x 2” | 800 x 600 pixels | 300 dpi |
| 2″ x 3″ | 400 x 600 pixels | 300 dpi |
| 3.41″ x 2.56″ | 1024 x 768 pixels | 300 dpi |
| 4.27″ x 3.20 | 1280 x 960 pixels | 300 dpi |
| 4” x 4” | 1200 x 1200 pixels | 300 dpi |
| 4″ x 6″ | 800 x 600 pixels | 300 dpi |
| 5.33″ x 4.00″ | 1600 x 1200 pixels | 300 dpi |
| 5″ x 7″ | 1000 x 1400 pixels | 300 dpi |
| 8” x 5.33” | 2400 x 1600 pixels | 300 dpi |
| 8″ x 10″ | 1600 x 2000 pixels | 300 dpi |
| 8.5” x 11” | 2550 x 3300 pixels | 300 dpi |
More Helpful Tips:
- Your screen resolution doesn’t accurately reflect your image resolution because monitor displays usually have about 72 to 116 ppi. To view print resolution of your image, zoom in up to 300-400%.
- When taking pictures from a digital camera for your print project, it’s best to set your camera to the highest resolution setting.
- Four-Color Process Printing uses the CMYK color mode. Convert RGB images to CMYK using graphics editing software such as Adobe Photoshop.
- Save your images in a lossless file format such as .tif and .eps to maintain accuracy and quality.
